A Change of Scenery by Jennifer Flaten

A dreary, gloomy January day; ugh, I don’t know about you, but January has the ability to suck the life right out of me.

I find it hard to concentrate on the projects I do have, let alone starting anything new. Instead of trying to find that creative spark, I am mooning over seed and plant catalogs, longing for spring when I can get into the garden.

Problem is, if I want to have any money to spend on that garden come spring, I had better get cracking on the writing.

On a Sunday afternoon, I take my cocoa and sit at the computer, staring at the blank white page.

When the kids ask if they can go sledding, I jump at the chance to get out of the house. Never mind that it is cold, damp and gray — I need to get out.

We go to our favorite sledding hill. I stand at the top, giving the kids a push down the hills, stamping my feet to keep warm.

My daughter asks if I would like to go down the hill with her. At first, I say no… but after watching them scream with delight as they zoom down the hill, I decide to go.

I squish on the sled with my daughter, I push us off and we zoom down the hill. We tumble out of the sled at the bottom of the hill, and on the way back up the hill my daughter challenges me to a race.

We finish our sledding rosy-cheeked and exhausted. By the time we get home, I have several new ideas… all of a sudden I can’t wait to get to work. It is funny how just a little change in scenery or activity can spark creativity.
