MamaBlogger365 – Making Magic by Jennifer Flaten
One afternoon the kids hopped in the car with big news — the school would be having an assembly featuring Mike Thaler, the author of the Black Lagoon (Teacher from the Black Lagoon, etc.) series for children.
Not only would he be speaking to the whole school, he would be signing copies of his books after the assembly. The kids immediately found his books and were super excited to get to meet him and have their books signed.
As a bonus, a select few fourth and fifth graders would get an opportunity to have a one-on-one author’s workshop with him.
Both of my fifth graders put their name in for the chance to meet the author, and luckily both were selected — imagine the hurt feelings if one wasn’t selected.
It was so nice to see them excited to meet an author, at a time when most other kids their age would rather meet Justin Bieber; my children were excited to meet an author.
They were not sure what they would do during the workshop, but they went armed with pencils, paper and in the case of one of my daughters, an example of her poetry.
After the workshop the girls admitted it wasn’t exactly what they thought, but when pressed they couldn’t say what they expected. I think they expected the meeting to be a little bit magical and maybe they would be written into a story or learn the secret magical process for creating a winning series.
Still, they did enjoy it and each one came home with a story they had created at the workshop and a little bit more appreciation for how hard it is to write a good story.
